The sun is shining in Stafford and I’m loving our Bolivian coffees at the moment. We’ve got some new, exciting and very very limited lots which will be making their way to the website in the next month, but there’s a couple which I’ve saved for you lucky lot.
The first of those is this month’s trip to funky town, Bolivia - La Llama Natural Longberry.
You may already of heard of the Rodriguez family, who own the La Llama farm, but if not suffice to say they have been amazing long-time friends of ours who make everything we get from Bolivia possible.
They named La Llama on their first visit there. Looking round the farm they were planning to buy, they came across a Llama. It’s the beloved national animal of Bolivia and, in their words:
“they encountered a llama that with its pointy ears, alert look and proud stance seemed to be saying “come near my land and I’ll spit on you”
We’ve bought from the farm the last couple of years, but it’s the first time we’ve tried a Longberry from there. On top of being the unusual Longberry varietal, this lot is natural processed (which was especially difficult in Bolivia this year, due to irregular rain late on in the season).
The natural process they have developed on their farms is very well controlled and refined – reflecting that this isn’t a traditional way of processing coffee in Bolivia, but one they’ve developed based on seeing natural processing at other coffee origins. The results are consistently fruity and funky, but still elegant and clean.
In the cup, expect a fruit cake. It leads with glacé cherries and sultanas soaked in black tea, all backed up by a cake-like sweetness. Then it changes up and there’s a sweet booze edge which reminds me of gin before it finishes, leaving a lasting finish and a delicate almond note.
