Nicaragua Los Altos

Bean name Nicaragua Los Altos
Country Nicaragua
Region Matagalpa
Other info Caturra and Maracatu

Los Altos farm, the newest farm to come under the ownership and management of the Bendaña family. Los Altos was bought in 2002 and is currently being replanted. The farm was devastated by the ojo de gallo (or 'chicken's eye') rust which wiped out much of the earlier Catimor varietal which covered 90% of the farm. This has now been replaced with more resistant Caturra and new planting with see the remaining 90% planted under Maracatu (a Maragogipe and Caturra and hybrid, also known as Maracaturra) and Bourbon. This farm is right next door to El Quetzal, and was another of the farms we visited on my trip to Nicaragua in may 2008.

Like on El Quetzal the facilities of this farm are being upgraded, and many of them are shared with Los Altos. One of these shared facilities is the wet mill, which is all done on El Quetzal.

In the cup this is a bright acidic cup with blackcurrant, rich, but then on the back its creamy rich viscosity that fills the mouth. This one is great filter.
