This small three and a half hectare farm borders the Cerro el Diablo cloud forest natural reserve in the Jiguina region of Jinotega. The combination of daily cloud cover and forest cover lead to a very slow maturation of the cherry. Within the farm there are three natural springs that originate in the mountains above the farm, and the constant cool temperatures make for perfect growing conditions. Because of where it is there are no roads into the farm, nor are there any allowed to be built so all the farming must be done on foot.
Owned by the Miresch family, this is another of our direct trade coffees which means we have paid a great price for some great coffee and gave it directly to the producer. This is the first year of stocking this coffee and I think its a great addition to our range.
All coffee cherry is wet milled on site and pulped, fermented and washed in a span of 24 - 36 hours. The initial drying is done on Indian raised beds and then the parchment is transported to lower elevations for the final drying stages at the mill in Jinojega.
So in the cup is the important part. This is a great all rounder coffee. It was initially bought with the idea of being a component in a blend but because of its great characteristics in the cup I didn't think it was fair to hide this coffee away, so it's here for you to enjoy. Think butterscotch in the opening part of this coffee, thick and gloupy sweet butterscotch that leaves you thinking it's a sweet solid coffee, but where is the depth? But then this whoosh of amazing stoned fruits hits your mouth in the aftertaste. Think plums, peaches and apricots all together in one big smash and grab on your tongue. This acidity gives it amazing complexity and makes it a delicious cup. A delicious coffee that works very well as espresso, brewed blend or single origin. Los Miligros is there nothing you cannot do?
