||Nicaragua Finca Limoncillo Natural 'Funky' Yellow Pacamara 2014
Never before have I felt such a need to tell you about the colour of a Pacamara. Before I had only ever seen red Pacamara, but times, they are a'changing. My searching on the internet has not found any other yellow Pacamaras being sold before. There are some countries growing some of this for seed stock, but no one is as far advanced as the Mierisch family and delivering it as a commercial crop.
This came from last year and was sold in the special auction that was held called Los Favoritos Fincas Mierisch, where some very special lots were sold to the highest bidder. We bought this coffee there, along with a company in Japan, and that was the entire production. Because we stepped up then we are now at the front of the line to get the new crop this year (as it grows into more and more commercial sizes). This also allows us to sell this coffee at half the price of last year, which is very exciting.
As I said this is a Pacamara varietal coffee. Pacamaras are a little crazy on the cupping table. Pacamaras are exciting. I like Pacamaras! Could ramble on about Pacamaras for a while, oh wait a minute, I did! If you'd like to know more about this fantastic varietal make sure to have a look at the article I wrote...
I first came across this yellow Pacamara three years ago, when visiting the farm. I begged Erwin to sell us some back then. He told me they were using all the crop to create more seedling to plant more coffee, but that it would soon be available.
So why is this so rare? Well this is a freak natural mutation from red fruit to yellow and was spotted by a security guard on the farm. They isolated it, harvested the seeds for more seedlings, and kept going and going.
Add to this natural processing that's been done by a great technician who is on the side of 'as mad as a box of frogs'...this is one of the most complex, one of the most exciting, and one of my favourite, natural coffees of recent times.
They told me that last year they had a policy of turning the coffee more often, which I decided made it more 'elegant', but quite different.
But they did have one lot which had not been turned as often, and was more crazy. So they prepared the sample for me to cup, and the first word I yelled out was 'FUNKY!' so this lot made it into the bag, and they officially offer this process to customers around the world, called "funky".
Whilst cupping this years washed and puled natural yellow pacamaras, I asked Elanie if they had done a natural, she said no, but would be happy to. So a phone call later we have this small lots of yellow pacamara, not only natural but using the "funky" process. I even got to go visit it the next day and took a photo.
In the cup expect mashed banana with melted, warm vanilla ice cream with a sherry boozy edge to it all. A delicious and unique amazing coffee.
