Tinganga (also known as Ting'ang'a) is located in Kiambu District in the highlands of Central Kenya, and is one of several estates managed by Sasini Estates in the Districts of Kiambu and Nyeri. Tinganga Estate covers approximately 182 hectares and employs around 400 people.

All the estates benefit from well-drained volcanic soils and are situated at between 1,630m to 1,935 metres. During peak seasons, Sasini Estates employ more than 8,000 people to prune, pick, sort and harvest coffee.

Every estate in the Sasini group maintains between 5% and 13% of its land with native forest and 2% to 10% with grass for mulch. About 5% to 10% is set aside for the cultivation of fruit, vegetables and other food stuffs for the workers.

Both exotic and indigenous forests have been introduced in order to improve the immediate environment and create a source of timber and fuel.

All the estates in the group observe a strict policy of not employing anyone below the age of 18 years. The company provides among other things good living houses, clean water, firewood, security and training to all employees.

The day care centers and primary schools for children of the workers are largely funded by the proceeds from coffee sales. The estates also provide health care to attend to short-term illnesses and runs a dispensary staffed with fully trained nurses.

But as always the content in the cup is just as important as provenance. This one has grapefruit like acidity, a kick in the mouth fresh, bright, light coffee, which then turns into big blackcurrant with apricots and mixed summer fruits. Not for espresso for me, but for those who like sour sweets then maybe it is.
