Farmers in Kiri planted their first coffee trees in I950. This coop has 2 wet mills namely Kiri and Kegwa. The coop is located within Njukiini locations of Gichugu Division, Kirinyaga East District on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya. “Njukiini” is synonymous with bee hives, a common thing in the area.

The coop is managed by an elected board of 7 members. Each member represents an electoral zone in the two wet mills . Currently the coop has 22 permanent members of staff who are headed by a Secretary Manager. The Secretary Manager oversees the day to day running of the coop under the supervision of the board. The society contracts an average of 30 casual workers during the peak season each year.

The 2 wet mills in the coop have a membership of 3300 farmers out of which 2300 are active and the rest are non-active.

In the cup expect a delicate body with blackcurrants running all through it, think Ribena concentrate with blueberries. Then you get liquorice, but think a liquourice pipe with the blue hundreds and thousands on it as there is an amazing sweetness. When cupping the Kednyans this year we all thought about colours to describe them, and ff it were a colour it would be deep rich blue and purple. I know, it sounds ridiculous but try it and I am sure you will agree with me.
