Finca Las Nubes is located high in the mountainous region of Esquipulas. The farm is over 200kms from Guatemala City and is owned and run by Don Fabio Solís, his wife, Doña Sonia.

Don Fabio the farmer works incredibly hard to make sure his coffee is seen at its best. He looks after his workers with good conditions, basic toiletries and clothing (unheard of on most farms). His land he tends to with care. Him family home he improves and recently extended it so it would be better place for his family.

How do I know all this? Well I was lucky enough to visit the farm this year, and lucky enough to be invited to spend the night and enjoy breakfast the following day with the family. A truly special time and one thing I count in my top ten moments ever.

The coffee won the first Guatemalan cup of excellence award back in 2001. Now a days if a farm wins the award then this can mean big prizes for the future. But at the time locally there was a lot of resistance by the exporters and internal market as COE gives power to farmers. Fabio had no where to sell his coffee as all the doors closed, so approached Mercanta or importers and asked for help. The coffee was good, and a long-term relationship was built.

The relationship has helped Fabio implement the improvements in his farm by improvement in his coffee, the price paid is above and beyond what fair trade does as this is a quality coffee. If you don't belive me whatch this video here.

But enough about the story, this coffee doesn't need a story, when you drink it. In the cup it has fine acidity, medium body with a lemon aftertaste. A great brewed coffee, a challenging but interesting espresso.
