Ethiopia is the birth place of coffee. I love the cup profiles of their coffees; diverse high quality and so geared up to the specialty market. But there is always something holding them back. Unlike Central and South America, I don't think Africa generally has grasped the real traceability aspect of coffee, of working in a partnership with the grower and roaster. I think they have everything else spot on, it's a real shame.

When we have no African coffees available, I get loads of emails every week asking me to stock beans from this region. But so many we find can be average, boring, and for me just not good enough. Much of this results from the practice of mixing great coffee lots with very average ones to make them go further. It actually just makes really good coffee bland. This often occurs becuase of the co-op approach that's been promoted as the way forward in much of Africa. Nevertheless, every now and again something special like this coffee comes along.

Naturally processed and sun dried, this "golden bean" is sorted for its distinctive golden apearance and taste. These special beans come from older plants in the area, but not all the beans from these plants are this colour. I have read it eminates from either an iron or zonc deficiency in the soil, all I know is that this tasted amazing on our cupping table.

In the cup it's intense with a blueberry fused with blackberry, dark fruit runs all over the aftertaste, with a little bit of special natural funk, but do not confuse that with dirty, because that it is not. Harrar is special but versatile and will suit espresso and filter or French press. If you prefer super citrus coffees, Harrar may not be for you, and I would suggest trying the Yirgacheffe. However, if you like something a little different, this is certainly different.
