Colombia La Vega

Bean name Colombia La Vega
Country Colombia
Region Cauca, La Vega
Other info Guardabosques Program

This coffee has been "hunted" down for us by our suppliers, going to places most coffee importers fear to tread due to the unsecured security of the area's. This is from the Cauca, an area near to the city of La Vega in Central Colombia. Unfortunately coffee-growing regions are also good places to grow illicit drugs. Colombia is an area that is known to grow cocaine and there are groups in the area that doesn't want people to grow coffee. In the past the US have sprayed crops in these areas with the support of the Colombian government to cut down drugs being grown. This is indiscriminate and harmful to the farmers not growing these thing.

But in a change of tact there is a new program Guardabosques (or 'forest ranger') programme. This programme seeks to discourage farmers in a number of regions from cultivating illicit crops such as coca and the opium poppy and instead to grow coffee. The help can be economic, technical, environmental and social support and well as providing legal alternatives for employment and income in those communities located in regions affected by the cultivation of illicit crops.

But at Has Bean a good story is not enough, this coffee also is great quality coffee. On a cupping table with the top ten Cup of excellence coffees from the Colombian this year this was one of my favourites, it tells you a lot about how good it is even in that company. Expect a great smooth body rich with some smooth citrus acidity with red grape fruit.
