This comes from the Colombian Cup of Excellence program. It's a competition to find the very best coffee from a country, where hundred if not thousands of samples are entered and cupped many times by both a national jury and an international jury.

The coffee comes from the Antioquia region of Colombia from a farm at a whopping 2020 meters above sea level, and is a fully washed Caturra varietal. I'll let Jose, the producer, tell you the rest.

I am José Arcadio Rueda. I am 39 years old, and I was born in the municipality of Urrao – Antioquia. I am living with my family that is composed of my wife Marbeluz Bermudez and my son Santiago, who is 14 years old. Since I was little I have been working in coffee. My parents are coffee producers as well, and they have taught us their passion for coffee.

My wife is in love with coffee and her happiness comes from accomplishing all the activities we develop in the farm each day. Together with our son Santiago, we cultivate coffee, tomatoes, beans, and other products for internal consumption in the farm, which also help us to receive income at the same time as the income from coffee. With the support of several organizations, we have participated in projects for the improvement of our living conditions and the protection of the environment.

For our family the most important thing is to work in agriculture and coffee, protecting water recourses in the rainforest so our children and grandchildren will find all the beauty that the landscape of Urrao has, still intact. 16 years ago we bought some ground in the village and we started coffee and agriculture. Today we have 9500 coffee trees and we are planning to plant another 8000 this year.

Five years ago we were invited to participate in a regional coffee contest and we were the winners of the first place. Due to this we have had the motivation to keep participating every year, and this year we also obtained the second place, from a field of 2800 coffee farmers from the whole Antioquia department.

For my family the success of being recognized as one of the best coffees of Antioquia and of Colombia is a great satisfaction and when someone asked me about what we do, we answered that first is love, joy, and a desire for producing high quality coffee. We desire that the coffee from our farm gets to be well known in other parts of the world. We also dream of planting more coffee and keeping on working hard for quality, so we can sell it at better prices.

In the cup expect thick treacle toffee, which has an amazing balance of sweetness, black pepper, and spice. An elegant and super clean cup from start to finish with a white grape-like acidity. A complex cup for sure.
