Brazil Fazenda São Judas Tadeu is back for its 5th year, after a year off in 2013, so it's amazing to welcome back this firm favourite. I wouldn't say we found this coffee, but we spotted it before it came 5th in the 2009 18th in 2010, 19th in 2011 Cup of Excellence competitions. Since then I have been able to visit the farm, and have met the Antônio, twice now. Antonio has built up a loyal following of buyers and has stopped participating focusing on looking after his customers.

Located in the Chapada Diamantina, in the municipality of Piata, Bahia, Fazenda Sao Judas Tadeu belongs toAntonio Rigno, who has been a coffee producer for more than 25 years. This region is very privileged and distinct: temperatures range between 2 and 18°C (35 to 64°F) in the winter, making for very good conditions for the production of high-quality coffee. Antonio seeks to plant the coffee on a sustainable way, providing technical orientation for the workers in the use of agrochemicals and recycling the containers of these products to avoid impacting the environment. He also plants trees in the area around the farm.

On the farm the coffee cherries are harvested selectively by hand twice a day during harvest season, and are transported by tractors to the pulping machine where the skin and pulp is removed from the beans. The beans are then spread on drying patios with the sticky mucilage still on them. The beans are then spread in layers of about 4cm and mixed several times a day to ensure even drying. The variety is Catuai and the pulped natural process is used.

In the cup expect molasses like acidity, with great chocolate and cocoa sweetness and a crunchy chocolate-type honeycomb aftertaste. Very well balanced espresso and lovely brewed coffee.
