Fazenda Santa Alina has been in the Silva family since 1907, when Mr. Joaquin Bernardes Da Silva Dias and his brother Mr. Pious Lindolpho Da Silva Dias bought the land. At that time the farm was planted out with 50,000 trees of "regular coffee" and 30,000 Red Bourbon trees. Some 55,000 new Red Bourbon trees were added over the next forty years.

Since the mid-1960s the farm has been developed to its present state. It is now managed by Joaquim Bernardes da Silva Dias, who took over from his father in 2001. Joaquim's careful management produces an outstanding 100% Bourbon coffee, which is handpicked and dried in the sun.

The farm lies at between 1,150 and 1,400 metres above sea level in Brazil's verdant Mogiana region, with conditions ideal for the production of superb specialty coffee.

I love the story of how this coffee arrived with us. The pre-shipment samples were sent to us from Brazil and they were cupped once the main consignment was already afloat. There was something very wrong about this coffee. It was marked up as pulped natural (as are the bagsin which it is contained), but it just didn't taste right for a pulped natural. Much communication backwards and forwards found that there had been a mistake and naturally processed coffee had been sent instead of pulped natural. But the coffee was so good and so different, so it stayed, and we are very lucky to have it.

In the cup expect a big bold cup with a chewy mouthfeel, mounds of dried fruits, a sweet pipe tobacco mid-palate. On the back end watch out for a rum finish that makes this delicious.
