Bolivia La Estrella Marcela Ticona Washed Caturra
It comes from my late summer trip to Bolivia, and was part of a process of cupping over 100 lots whilst there at their cupping lab. This is from a brand new producer and there was only one lot we approved, but WOW did I approve.
Grown like so many amazing coffees in the Caranarvi region of Bolivia and is from the La Estrella colony in the region of Franja se los Yungas. It also comes from a family with a long tradition on coffee in Caranarvi.
Marcela is a single mother bringing up 5 children in the hardest of circumstances. Her husband left 5 years ago, and she had to pick up the pieces and carry on with not only the farm but also looking after the children.
This particular lot is Caturra, it was picked and processed on the 3rd of August 2014.
One of the challenges of getting high quality, consistent coffee from Bolivia is the fact that most farms are quite small on average, they are only 3 to 8 hectares. But you have to start somewhere and this coffee proves Marcela can produce amazing coffee. Paying a higher price, and feeding back that this coffee is special means she can go back and look at what she did on the 3rd of August 2014, and try and do this again next harvest. I hope one day the lot is big enough to share with the world, but for now, you get to sneak peak on a tiny lot from my Steve's Super Secret Stash Subscription #SSSSS
In the cup expect a lovely caramel mouthfeel, and a delicious pear like sweetness, with a gentle black grape like acidity and walnut aftertaste.
