||Bolivia Finca Bolinda Caturra Washed 2015
||Caranavi - Bolinda
This is a very familiar name of coffee to customers of has bean who have been paying attention over the years. We used to buy from this Canton (Bolinda is a small area outside of Caranarvi, Canton just means settling / small living area) from a guy called Felix Copa Calle. Felix was a super star grower, and his coffee was used by the first ever Brewers Cup champion from Ireland (who was an In My Mug subscriber student), Keith O’Sullivan in 2011.
Felix grew amazing coffee, but with declining yields, leaf rust and challenges in the area, he has given up coffee growing to grow Coca (the product used to make cocaine completely legal to grow in Bolivia). We drove past his farm in August and it was abandoned, he's move to South Yungas where its easy to make a living.
But there are still growers in the area of coffee. Small growers, 200 -300 plants each, trying to make a living. So this comes from a group of around 30 growers in Bolinda Canton picking up the baton that Felix has left behind.
The farms, like so many of our favourites, are located near the town of Caranvi. They range from an altitude of 1,400 - 1,600 m.a.s.l. and are all owned by these small holders.
In the cup expect a mug of drinking chocolate; sweet and easily drinkable, with a gloopy, super thick, lovely mouthfeel. There is an underlying delicate acidity of peach, but chocolate dominates here.
