Description

I'd like to re-introduce a coffee that we already have on the site. Well, kind of; we had this coffee from a Cup of Excellence lot from this year's Rwandan competition.

You're not going to believe me but I swear to you: I didn't know we already had it until we had agreed to buy it. You see, here at Has Bean we blind-cup every sample that hits our door, the key word being 'blind'. This sample jumped off the table as the best, so the cupping code got fed back to the importers and we asked them to release it and send me the farm info.

So it's only as I sit down to write this description up that I find this coffee is a sample we approved quite a few months ago. But I feel vindicated that this blind approach means we find the tastiest coffees. This time you get it at a much keener price too.

But some things do not change. We still know little about who grew it. This comes from a washing station in the North West of Rwanda where, like in the rest of Rwanda, most coffee is grown by either small holders or garden growers. They then take their coffee to the washing station to sell it, and it gets blended together. What we do know is that it is a Bourbon (like most Rwandan coffee). It's a fully washed coffee, submerged in water fermentation; again this is typical for Rwandan coffees, and gives it a super clean and delicious cup.

In the cup expect a similar cup to the Cup of Excellence version. It's maybe not quite as vivid (the Cup of Excellence lot is hand picked out of small lots for its competition possibilities); it's floral, with jasmine and honey, and has a delicious undertone of oranges. Unlike its expensive brother, it has a little more body and a sweetness like the icing on a cake, sticky and creamy.
