Description

The first ever Cup of Excellence from Africa, and I was lucky enough to be part of the first ever jury in the Rwanda competition. That means that I tasted every single coffee from this competition, even those that didn't make it to the event itself. This was my second favourite coffee from all those submitted. The other one of my favourite two didn't make it due to the dreaded potato defect. There is an issue sometimes in Rwanda with a defect called 'potato' because it tastes of... you guessed it potato.

Now I'm of the school of thinking that believes if you cup any Rwandan coffee enough you will find this defect eventually, though luckily this is very rare in the end product as these coffees have been cupped so many times that its going to be in a minute amount at most. However, in the unlikely event that you should you find it in your coffee, just pop it back to us and we will replace it free of charge.

Anyway in the cup, the reason I liked this coffee so much was its mouth feel, it is thick, gloopy and rich. It is malty, very malty like a great real ale, with a baked apple covered in sugar and a hit of spice and caramel.

MIG Buremera represent farmers distributed in the coffee hills of the southeast of Rwanda. They won the first place and rank also third and ninth in the competition.
