Description

We are very pleased and extremely proud to offer this UK exclusive coffee grown by our good friends in Nicaragua. This coffee is one that found us via the Cup of Excellence programme, and we now have a long-term relationship with the farmer.

El Limoncillo is owned by Dr. Erwin Mierich. As he welcomed us to the spacious complex of his farm during a visit, my first impression was that he looked more like a farmer than a doctor.

He explained: "While I was living in United States, I worked as a gynaecologist, but then I had to comeback to Nicaragua and lead this farm. Coffee has been my passion since I was a little boy".

Giving us a rapid tour around the farm, he fluently explained each step of the coffee process from the sowing, the development of the coffee trees, the picking of the coffee cherries, the wet process, the removing of pulp and the dry process. He also spoke about all the fine details involved with coffee production in order to produce one of the best coffee beans with great quality in Matagalpa.

My first trip to a growing country was Nicaragua. I learned a lot during the visit, not in the least on the last night I found out how Latin American people like to party. The two people who showed me were Erwin and Steve Mierisch, the sons of the farmer. It was really cool, friends were made, and they are now also people from whom we buy coffee.

In the cup, I can best explain this coffee as being like a toffee apple. First comes the sweetness of caramel, then a juiciness and a bite of green apple acidityThe finish dulls the acidity again with the sweetness returning. This year's crop also seems to have more body, which is awesome in espresso
