Description

Farmers in New Kiriti planted their first coffee trees in early I960’s. This coop has three wet mills namely Kayu, Ngondo and Kirimahiga. The coop is located within Kihoya location, Kangema division, Murang’a North District on the Eastern slopes of the Abadare Ranges.

The coop is managed by an elected board of 7 members. Three members represent Kayu wet mill and each of the other 2 wet mills are represented by 2 board members. Each board member represents an electrol zone in the wet mill. Currently the coop has 19 permanent members of staff who are headed by a Secretary Manager. The Secretary Manager oversees the day to day running of the coop under the supervision of the board. The society hires about 20 casual workers per wet mill during peak picking season.

The three wet mills in the coop have a membership of 3468 farmers. Kayu wet mill has a total membership of 1861.

In the cup you get a huge amount of summer fruits, think oranges, apricots and peaches, in fact think a whole pack of Opal Fruits (Starburst for the young of mind). When cupping the Kenyans this year we all thought about colours to describe them, and if this were a colour it would be deep orange and deep yellow, I know, it sounds ridiculous but try it and I am sure you will agree with me.
