Description

In the cup this is citrus fruits of lemons and oranges mixed with sweet summer fruits. Think peaches having a fight with a lemon. The aftertaste turns all sweet and fruity, in something that reminds me of peach Hubba Bubba.

This year in February I took my first trip to Kenya. Not to meet producers but to get an insight into how the market works, and how we can improve the quality of what we buy from Kenya.

Much of Kenyan coffee comes from co-operatives, which means it's tough to go visit a person or build a long term relationship. But there is a very transparent auction system in Kenya, and an opportunity to cup lots of coffee. I cupped hundreds while I was there, and from those cuppings we brought three back with us. This is the first of those. This is lot number 1843 and was bought from the Kenya coffee auctions on the 22nd of January, and we bought the entire lot when cupping at the exporters office.

The Karani mill is on the southern slopes of the ice-peaked Mount Kenya ( which peak at 5,199masl). The village sits at an altitude of between 1500 masl and 1750 masl.

The Kabare co-operative (which owns the mill) has 6025 active and registered farmers who supply the mill with coffee cherries. They have approximately 422 hectares of land planted with coffee between them. Of those farmers, 1500 members supply this mill. There are 10 other mills in the Kabare society.

This is a fully washed, submerged under water, and sun-dried coffee, using African bed drying tables instead of patios.
