Description

The farm was bought in 1976 by Samuel Coto Escobar and is now managed by his son and daughter. Stuardo Coto Markus is the General Manager, and Gladys Coto Markus de la Cerda manages the farm’s finances.

The varietal Maragogype (pronounced mar-rah-go-jeepeh) was originally found in Brazil (again), and is a mutant from the Typica varietal. The plant is very distinctive due to its very tall and huge leaves and fruit.

The coffee seed / bean is also very distinctive due to its large oversize. This has created some interest in the bean as it's very distinctive, and I’ve seen a lot of them from Brazil, Guatemala, and Mexico. I’ve heard it said that the larger bean produces a more flavoursome coffee, but my experiences don’t really show this.

The bean's size makes it a tiny bit of a gimmick but there are some fantastic samples out there, which I think has very little to do with the bean size and more to do with the quality of husbandry and environment.

The plant is very low yielding despite how tall it can grow. Many of the Maragogype coffees from Guatemala are a blend of several small lots which are sold to the mill and then bulked to create a larger lot. The Maragogype we have bought from Finca El Platanillo is a true single estate Maragogype. The result is a more consistent and high quality coffee, season after season.

In the cup expect toffee, mixed with green apple acidity and hints of tropical fruits. Super clean, super sweet, super coffee.

This one is great at medium roast to medium dark. Anywhere after first crack and around 20 or so seconds into second.
