This region is growing crop year on crop year, it has worked hard to raise its standards and that's really starting to show at the cupping table. We have stocked the El Salvador La Fany estate for nearly a year now, and we were really pleased to see it attained Cup of Excellence for the first time this year (4th place no less). But saying this we wanted to bring you something a little different, and when we had the chance to bring the Number one lot (yes that's right the best of the best according to a panel of highly rated experts) then that's something you must take. Most of the winning lots go to Japan who just love the whole concept of the cup of excellence, it's a triumph to bring it to Europe. Grown in Santa Ana on a farm only 8.4 hectares of which 4.2 hectares is used to grow coffee, this wet processed bourbon was the only coffee to attain the special award of over 90% in this years competition (90.47%).

When I won this coffee at auction I received an email from someone close to the farmer on his behalf thanking me for buying his coffee. I sent one straight back saying it is me who should be thanking him for producing such fine coffee, and on behalf of my customers who I know will love this one. The farmer's (Mr Rafael Pérez) official quote when he saw the auction results was

"I feel so happy, I never expected that all my work and effort could have such recognition, I will work so hard next year,"

The cup of excellence doesn't give anything for nothing. It believes a farmer should be rewarded for his hard work, and that's what makes a difference. Farmers are proud people who want a fair price not charity. 85% of the price paid goes direct to the. This years price was a record for El Salvador cup of Excellence, and rightly so. That means you will have to pay a little more for this one, but the upside is Mr Pérez gets a big proportion of that.

In the cup expect berry like fruit with apple hints and a really full body, and an aftertaste that last for a very long-time in espresso. A real espresso coffee that is equally at home on the filter maker/ french press. Go on treat your self, when was the last time your bought the number one coffee from the Cup of Excellence?
