This month it's: El Salvador Finca Manuela Pulped Natural Bourbon 2016
Hello hello hello and WELCOME my friends to #SSSSS2016! I was overwhelmed at the response I got last year when I asked about going on this journey again this year and the reaction to the subscription being released in December blew me away, really can't say thank you enough to you all for being stunningly fantastic people! I am blessed to have what I think is the best job in the world and it's thanks to you all that I get to do what I do so THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! ???????????? I'm not sure if you know the story of how Has Bean began (click here [http://www.hasbean.co.uk/blogs/articles/6488493-how-has-bean-began] if you'd like to find out more) but at one time this was all a dream in my head, not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined where Has Bean is today, I'm thankful for every day that I get to share my biggest passion in life ??????
Many of you are with me for a second year but there are also many many new faces too! To those of you who were here last year, you know the drill ???? To those of you who are new, let me explain a little about what's going on...
This is a subscription that sends you coffees that you can't buy, coffees that won't be available on our website, the only roasts of these coffees are the roasts heading in your direction! Often when I'm on buying trips I taste phenomenal coffees then find out there's only 2 bags available, obviously I can't possibly say no to these wondrous things as they're just so super delicious but in the past it was sometimes a bit of a struggle to find loving homes for them, BUT NOW with #SSSSS I'm so happy that I get to send these tiny lots out to a very special bunch of customers ????
"Hey Steve! What happens if we really like the coffee and want more?" Well I'm afraid you can't have any! Because it's all gone! Always super happy to recommend another coffee that's along the same lines so please get in touch if you'd like such a recommendation but once we've roasted this coffee that's it, all gone, soz! ????
"Steve, when can I expect to normally receive my coffee?" If you're in the UK (as most of you are!) then normally we aim to dispatch your #SSSSS2016 coffee in time to arrive for the 1st of each month, that might mean it arrives a few days before if the dates of a particular month are working against us, or pretty close to the 1st, but always in time for the 1st of each month. If you're an international subscriber (HELLOOOOOO out there!) then your coffee should arrive during the first week of each month. This first month is a little wonky because of Christmas and New Year but we'll be set by the end of January, we'll be roasting + posting the next #SSSSS bag on Thursday January 28th so should be with you all shortly after that.
This email is to let you know that the coffee was roasted today and is now in the hands of Royal Mail zooming towards you! Hopefully will be popping through your letterbox very shortly as all #SSSSS2016 coffees are sent with Royal Mail First Class postage for UK subscribers, Royal Mail International Priority for international subscribers.
OK so that's pretty much the rundown of what you can expect over the rest of #SSSSS2016! If you have any questions that I didn't answer above please get in touch, easiest way to do that is by just hitting reply to this email and your words will be sent in my direction ????
Without further ado let's get to the COFFEE!
OH NO NOT HIM! ????????????????????????????
Yes my friends it's Alejandro Martinez! You may remember him from such other coffee farms as the wonderful Finca Argentina but this coffee is not from Finca Argentina, oh yes Ale is doing big things! You probably saw the name of the farm at the top of this email so you won't be surprised that it's not from Finca Argentina but instead Ale's new farm Finca Manuela.
Ale bought this farm last year when it became available after being abandoned for a number of years. Ale has been a good friend for a number of years, in fact I spent Christmas this year with him and his family, and he has spent a number of weeks with us here in Stafford. So you can say we have more than a working relationship.
The reason for buying the neighbouring farm was two fold. One to increase production, but also to take over a farm that was ruining his farm. Leaf rust is a big problem in El Salvador, is an air born fungus that spreads through the wind from farm to farm. With this one being abandoned and not being treated or managed for leaf rust it was playing havoc with Finca Argentina's crop and no matter what Ale did to try and keep it under control it kept coming back. So when it became available it seemed like common sense to buy it up and clean it up.
Slightly smaller than Argentina at 47 Manzanas the first job was to address the leaf rust and start replacing some of the old plant stock. Ale has done this with a number of different varietals to see what works best. This proactive and sensible approach to farming is what we have gotten to know Ale best for. But this also affects productivity so the farm is barely producing anything at the moment because of all this pruning and replanting.
This is a tiny small lot from the remaining trees and was put together to see what the quality would be like. We had no idea before cupping it what it would be like, so our expectations were low. Luckily for us there was no need to worry at all, and it looks like this farm could be a real keeper. If it's this good as a test lot imagine what full production could be like?! We snapped it up as a special lot just for #SSSSS so you can try it, you're the only people tasting coffee from this farm, lucky lucky you lot! ????????????
Expect to see more from this farm in the future, and expect it to be better and better, exciting times ahead and you're on the crest of the wave! ????
If you're 1 of my Instagram followers (*ahem* @hasbean [https://www.instagram.com/hasbean] in case you're not following me yet!) you might have seen that I was a lucky lucky lucky coffee roaster at the end of last year, as I quickly mentioned earlier I got to spend Christmas in El Salvador with Ale and his family and I had a FANTASTIC time! ???????? Swimming pools and barbeques and sunshine for Christmas, I've never spent a Christmas outside the UK before and it was a truly lovely experience! Also check out Ale's moustache...
So I suppose you want to know what to expect when you brew the coffee? Hmm well I suppose I could let you know, 1 more lovely picture first though...
In the cup you can look forward to dark chocolate covered toffee with a high % cacao finish. It's got a chewy mouthfeel but remains a very clean cup, there's a little hint of green banana plus a shoulder of green apple.

For those that were with me last year I'm going to re-use a line that I used last time we had a coffee from Ale, for those that weren't with me this is for you...
I hope you zoom through the bag more quickly than you can say, "Ale has an excellent cowboy hat!" (don't you just love that picture above?! It's 1 of my favourite pictures! #hatenvy)
Make sure to let me know how you get on and what you think of the coffee using the hashtag #SSSSS or #SSSSS2016 (take your pick, I'll see what's more popular and stick with it for the rest of the year, this decision is in your hands!)
