Description

It is rare on the cupping table for me to be stopped in my tracks, but one such occasion was with this coffee. The Geisha varietal troubles me, so I was already pre-disposed not to like it. Nevertheless it was tasted blind, and I found it a truly special and amazing coffee.

To find out more about Geisha read here or here but it is enough to say the varietal is very controversial. This is only compounded by the lack of quality that I've observed from Tarrazu over the past few years.

But wow, wow, this one is great. It has a very crisp citrus acidity, notes of lime, floral, very juicy, hints of molasses and lemon. It is very aromatic, elegant and wickedly clean. It has huge mouthfeel and a lingering aftertaste.

The plantation, La Candelilla, is located in La Sábana on the south bank of the River Pirrís, 1.2km west of the centre of San Marcos de Tarrazú. The plantation was started by Mr. Victor Mora, one of the first settlers of the region of Los Santos, around 1900. The mill was opened by Rafael Sánchez and his wife, Lucia, in the summer of 2000. The entire Sánchez family works there. With huge altitudes of up to 1750m, this small micro lot is grown on the very tip of the estate.

A special coffee with a very special price but extremely worthy, with its quality, rarity and unique cup profile. This one has grabbed the opportunity to prove my preconceptions wrong, not just in terms of the varietal but the region of oritin too.
