Description

Fazenda Tapera is a small, traditional farm which lies in the rolling hills around the small town of Piatã, at an average altitude of 1,300 metres above sea level. It's owned by Altemir Vieira, who has been farming coffee in this region for all of his life and has owned Fazenda Tapera for over two years. It is very much a family farm, managed and run by Altemir, his wife, and his son and daughter.

The farm extends over seven hectares, two hectares of which are planted out with Catuaí, which is the varietal of this particular coffee. This is a dwarf variety of the coffee plant; it doesn't grow very high, and this is its most obvious distinguishing factor. Selected by the instituto Agronomico in the 1950s–1960s, it accounts for 50% of the coffee acreage in Brazil and is widely used in Central America. Catuai is a high yielding coffee plant resulting from a cross between Mundo Novo and Yellow Caturra. The fruit does not fall off the branch easily, which helps when there is strong wind or rain, and it's also more resistant to disease and pests than other types like Bourbon.

The main harvest on Fazenda Tapera usually runs from June until August, during which the farm produces around 100 bags of coffee. The cherries are picked by hand when fully ripe and then pulped, before being dried on patios.

In the cup expect clean and sweet with a chocolatey and nutty mouthfeel. Low in acidity, it has a strong body and is well balanced with notes of roasted hazelnuts and walnuts. A delicious example of a Brazilian pulped natural.
